Original job description

The Role

Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President Academic, the Dean provides leadership and vision in advancing the Faculty’s strategic plan for research, teaching, and service across its broad areas of scientific inquiry and technological innovation, in alignment with Thompson Rivers University’s mission and vision. As TRU continues to refine its identity as a dual-purpose institution, the Dean will shape the Faculty’s academic strategy, champion research excellence, foster respectful engagement with Indigenous communities, and help bring TRU’s values to life through innovation, sustainability, and a culture of care.

As the successful candidate, you will have an earned doctoral degree, or equivalent, senior academic leadership experience, preferably at the level of chair, head, or higher, or equivalent, and a strong record of strategic, administrative, and research leadership in a complex university setting, along with a deep understanding of the Canadian post-secondary landscape for both research and teaching.

The Organization

Located in the heart of British Columbia’s southern interior, Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is a dynamic hub for post-secondary education, research, and innovation. With a campus in Williams Lake and five additional regional centres, TRU welcomes a diverse student body into a broad spectrum of academic, professional, and trades programs. Recognized as a leader in distance and online education, TRU is distinguished by its commitment to flexibility, innovation, and student-centered access.

TRU is entering a bold new chapter with a forward-looking vision that has sparked significant excitement across the university community. At the heart of this momentum is TRU’s reaffirmed identity as a dual-purpose institution, one that intentionally balances its commitment to open access with an ambitious agenda for research intensification. This evolving mission reflects TRU’s deep-rooted values of inclusion and opportunity and positions the university to expand its scholarly impact, foster innovation, and deepen its contributions to regional and global challenges alike.
